Implementing EMS into daily business routines
Improving on the way companies work is a good way to limit damage inflicted to our environment. Using an Environmental Management System (EMS) can provide these corporations with the necessary foundations in order to make the most of effective environmental management.
Introducing an ISO 14001 compliant Environmental Management System will assist many organizations with the implementation and integration of environmental values in day to day routines that affect our environment on a daily basis.
ISO 14001 is a collection of international environmental standards which provide the foundations for developing and implementing an environmental management system. The ISO 14001 standard was created at the Rio Summit on the Environment in 1992.
ISO 14001 is the core of the ISO 14000 series. It lays the actual foundation for implementing an Environmental Management System into day to day operations by which corporations could be certified using third party “watch dog” organizations.
Investigating the means to properly introduce such an environmental management system will contribute greatly to closing the gap between theory and practice on environmental management. Goals of such an enterprise would be to identify obstacles and offer possible solutions for them. Through training and raising awareness the companies involved are provided with the necessary means in order to successfully implement an environmental management system into their organization.
Working together and sharing the same point of view is the key to successfully implementing such a system into real life business the way it is conducted every day. All involved should use the same means, hold the same values, apply the same environmental management techniques and work alongside each other to achieve the goals that are set due to the global nature of our environment. Examples of these types of environmental management systems would be the "Air Quality Management Program" for airports in Canada.
Approaching business through environmental management systems may prove to be helpful to shareholders as well making it easier to monitor the “success rate” when integrating environmental management systems into day to day processes.
As a foundation the ISO 14001 standard is a useful tool for implementing environmental management systems. However, implementing it, using the minimum requirements as a goal, does not necessarily lead to improved environmental performance of a company that utilizes it. Governmental regulations and applied pressure from the company’s shareholders will determine the effectiveness of the environmental management system and this will also be the driving force behind achieving cutting edge day to day environmental management.
